Implementation of IPM in apple orchards in Korca, Albania

 Objective:
Support the implementation of a private sector approach to improve apple integrated production in  Korca region of Albania

            Improved and harmonized production.
An Apple IPM Technical Guideline including relevant annexes has been developed and distributed to all farmers interested to implemented IPM. This document provides guidance to farmers on what is required and what is not permitted, e.g.:
●At least 5% of the entire orchard surface must be managed as ecological infrastructures, with no input of pesticides or fertilizers
● Fertilizer input should meet the nutrient requirements of the apple trees and be based on soil analysis
●Preventive (indirect) plant protection measures must be considered before direct control measures are used.
           Rationale pesticide use training
Theoretical and practical training course on rationale pesticide use developed including an examination to assess knowledge transfer.
Farmer friendly documents have been developed and distributed to all farmers of the IPM producers.
          Project impact
●Reduction in pesticide misuse:
● No WHO class I pesticides applied anymore
● Only pesticides from green and yellow list applied
● Ventilation sprayer use resulted in less pesticide usage.
●  Soil samples are taken by all IPM producers and fertilization is improved (reduced)
●  Reduced damage by main pests and diseases, compared to non-IPM apple producers
●  Pruning and orchard management is improved (e.g. bare soil).
●  links to Andermatt Biocontrol AG in Switzerland have been established for the introduction of biocontrol products in apple production in Korca and the replacement of pesticides
